Founded by C.M. Spencer (see Spencer Repeating Rifle Company) and Sylvester H. Roper. Roper as born
in New Hampshire in 1830. He was a mechanical engineer, lived at 229 Eustis Street in Roxbury,
Massachussets. He did many inventors as the sewing machine, a knitting machine, hot air furnaces,
kitchen ranges, screw making machines, a steam powered bicyclem guns and many others. He died
at the Charles River Park in 1894 of a hearth attack while making a trial of a new steam bicycle. A shotgun was made in 12 and 16 gauge in barrel diameter. Less that 2,000 shotguns has been manufactured. Roper manufactured all parts of the gun except the barrel. Some are marked Made by Hopkins and Allen Mfg. CO. Norwich, Conn. The company operaten for two year at Amherst and seven more years at Hartford. Furthermore, probably only at Hartford, .41 caliber (the catalog said .40 caliber) five and six shot rifles were made at $45 respectively $58. Combined guns were made it seems only a 4 shot combination was available. |
